Illuminae is a young adult science fiction book. It is the first book in the Illuminae Files trilogy. This book came out in 2015, the sequel, Gemina, came out in 2016, and the final book in the trilogy is yet to have its name release but will be released in 2017.
This is not your ordinary novel. Although there are a few pages of actual “writing”, most of the book is made up of files, as the trilogy name suggests. There are emails between characters, surveillance reports, AI codes, interviews, diary entries, and blueprints, among other files.
Illuminae begins on a small planet on the edge of the universe, in the future more than 500 years from now. The book follows two main characters: Kady and Ezra. The first scene is in the middle of all the action. Not only did long-time high school lovers, Kady and Ezra, break up last night, but their planet is invaded by enemy warships.
The survivors of the invasion are taken onto two rescue ships: the Alexander and the Hypatia. The two lovers are separated. The ship Alexander is run by an AI, AIDAN. There is a lot more going on than just fleeing the enemy warship (Lincoln), but the AI also goes rogue. The crew has a lot to worry about, fleeing the Lincoln with a damaged ship, controlling the AI and debating whether to turn it off for good, as well as a sickness that was launched on the population during the invasion.
Another big plot point for this book is the importance of information. Information isn’t free, and who gets it? Is it better to have all the information? Or just what you need to know? Is all the information you get true? What would you do to get the right information?
I gave this book 5/5 stars. I am using the Goodreads’ ranking system meaning “I love it,”
