Biblical Brunch #1 ~ Jesus Walks on Water

I will be sharing stories from the Bible.  I am NOT trying to influence your beliefs or tell you what to believe.  I also expect you to respect me and my beliefs.  If you do not believe in the Bible, that is okay, you don’t have to read the post or you can take it simply as a story.

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dispersed the crowds. And after he sent the crowds away, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already far from land, was taking a beating from the waves because the wind was against it. As the night was ending, Jesus came to them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified and said, “It’s a ghost!” and cried out with fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them: “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”Peter said to him, “Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you on the water.” So he said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat, walked on the water, and came toward Jesus.  But when he saw the strong wind he became afraid. And starting to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me! Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they went up into the boat, the wind ceased.  Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

After they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret.  When the people there recognized him, they sent word into all the surrounding area, and they brought all their sick to him. They begged him if they could only touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

I am taking this story from Bible.org. (Matthew 14:22-36)

This is one of the many famous stories from the Bible.  The story of Jesus walking on water is known world-wide.  Now, in Minnesota the majority of us walk on water.  No we are not magically, we simply do so in winter and on the ice covering the lakes and rivers.  It is important to remember the setting of this story, the Middle East, where ice and snow aren’t a common occurrence.  This makes it a miracle for someone not to fall beneath the waves in the water.  It’s not an easy task to put your faith into someone or something you can’t see.  This story reminds us that miracles can happen if we truly have faith in Jesus.  There are millions of stories out there that talk about these miracles.  Peter was walking on the water until he started to doubt Jesus.  The world can sometimes be a grim place, it is important to put faith in God that he will guide us through the problems and find peaceful solutions.   However, we cannot doubt him or question him.   In doing so, we are believing that we humans can come up with a better solution.  We, as Christians, need to believe that God has the power to do anything.
